Denied the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their achievements with some not even able to create finished pieces, the pandemic hit last years design students hard. As a designer/maker the idea of handing in a body of 2D work for grading and nothing more is horrifying to me, especially after what will be nearly two years of dedicating my life to it. I suppose as design students we have been spoilt by what has become the natural order of things and have a very defined ideas about what that showcase looks like, for fashion designers it’s usually the catwalk, for textiles a static exhibition etc.

But last year there were those who started to imagine a different way, those that produced ingenious ways of bringing their creations to life. Little sparks of brilliance that inspired me to contemplate the visualisation of my project, to such an extent that it has now become an integral part of my intended outcomes. My masters is not just about producing beautiful frocks anymore, it is about how I communicate the themes that led to their creation to an audience to educate and stimulate conversation.

Whatever the circumstances we find ourselves in as this course comes to an end I’d like to be able to bring my work to life in a manner that is meaningful to both myself and the onlooker. I’m not totally sure how I’m going to do that at the moment but I’m having fun experimenting with animation and apps to see what might be possible.
